Amboyna is from Southeast Asia. The heartwood is a brilliant red, while the sapwood is tan and gray. This “Cadillac of Burl” straddles the line between, providing a beautiful mix of the most sought after of burls. The swirls and patterns will mesmerize. Everyone who sees it will wonder if it is real. Yes, nature really makes this wood this beautiful. The wood is set off by the gold carvings of the center band and cap. Mesquite is from the desert Southwest and brings to mind smoked barbecue. This piece of mesquite is very unique for its rippling curl. Quite rare to find, I was one of the lucky few able to get this piece to bring to you. The black flecks in the brown add a rustic feel that only mesquite provides. The shimmers as the light plays along the curl doesn’t show well in photographs – you have to hold it in your hand to really understand. The statesman carvings in the medallions and center band are done in gold titanium and are eye catching on their own.

Bethlehem, Israel is home to some of the oldest olive vineyards in the world. My contact there prunes the trees, keeping them vital and productive. The larger limbs are stored in a cave for six months for the wood to season. He then ships it to me. This pen has beautiful grain and has a slight curl in it, rare for olive. Buckeye Burl is one of the most surprising woods I have ever worked with. I never know what it is going to look like until I’m finished. The colors range from cream, brown, grey and black. The figure swirls all over the place and the eyes are stunning. This pen looked as black as ebony when I started. Once I started working it, all the other colors suddenly appeared. What I thought was going to be ugly turned out to be one of the prettiest buckeye burl pens I have made. The Jr. Statesman accents really set off this wood.
